Supporting Happy Marriages This Valentine's Day
Over the years we have supported many couples who have had long and happy marriages. This Valentine’s day we want to celebrate the lovely couples and know the secret to their success. Upon speaking with a few of them we can see that each marriage is unique and that each person in the marriage works with the other through the good and bad times.
Respect Each Other
Derek and Ann have been married for 66 years. Derek is living with dementia and Ann supports him at home. Derek and Ann live an active lifestyle and enjoy participating together in social occasions arranged locally.
Ann says that they both have a similar sense of humour which helps, telling us “We never have quarrelled very much- we have respect for each other”. Derek likes to tell everybody that he met Ann in the library and he only went in for a book and came out with a wife.
Give and Take
Trisha and George have been ma
rried for 57 Years. Trisha told us that the secret to a long and happy marriage is “putting up with each other’s faults, as we all have them”. George tells me that the secret is “give and take”.
Trisha and George always check on each other, Trish now sleeps downstairs and George has moved his bed downstairs to stay close to her. They never miss saying good morning and good night to each other. These little compromises ensure they are together every day.
Spend Time Together
Rosemary and Tom have been married for 36 years. Rosemary and Tom both agree that the secret to their marriage is simply being together. Rosemary says that they went out and travelled a lot together. Tom says “it was love at first sight” and his secret is being in love itself. Tom advises all couples to stay together as long as they can and do as much as they can together.
Although love is a big part of making a marriage work, we have found many other characters help to keep the sparkle alive; the mutual respect that our couples have for each other; knowing when to compromise and what the other will appreciate has strengthened the bond between them.
Tell your partner you love them, go for a walk together, do something spontaneous or just hold their hand. Whatever it is that keeps your marriage healthy and happy be sure to appreciate your partner this Valentine’s day.
